BLUE ROUTE
HISTORICAL TOUR IN THE FAUBOURG* DU DESSUS* or de SAINTE QUITTERIE DE LA BASTIDE*
SITE 6
RUE DES PYRENEES or RUE TRAVERSIERE
It is the part of the great Bordeaux to the Pyrenees road across the town.It was built between 1777 and 1782 using the old moats of the bastide and established « darré la
ville ». The lay-out of the road was not easy to decide as the road was meant to go through the very populated faubourg Sainte Quitterie. A number of inhabitants were expelled and their
houses pulled down.
Thanks to its location along this very important road, at the foot of the Pyrennes, Plaisance grew in population and its trade thrived after 1780.
From the end of the 18th century to 1837 rue des Pyrénées or rue Traversière (because it runs through the town) was the core of Plaisance urban growth. The new Rapine district
developped from there in the 1780s and 1790s.
At n°18 you will see the first « gendarmerie »* built in the town at the beginning of the 19th century .
