GREEN ROUTE
WALK 1
AROUND « BARRY DEBAT* » or FAUBOURG de DESSOUS*
This district lies outside the wall of the « bastide* », downstream from the town, hence its name.
It was less populated and less busy than Faubourg de Dessus situated upstream. Two causes : the presence nearby of a hamlet peopled with descendants of lepers
(called capots or gagots in this area) and the tanneries which had been set up there.
Until recently many inhabitants in Plaisance living « downtown » had a vegetable garden there.
• barry = faubourg = suburb
• debat= de dessous= downstream
• bastide= walled town in the South West of France
